What is Spinal Touch?
Spinal Touch is a gentle, light touch treatment that helps the body return to its natural state of balance and ease.I offer Spinal Touch treatments at my practice in Plymouth, where this gentle approach supports the body in releasing tension and improving posture. It It is based on the understanding that when the body’s centre of gravity is properly aligned, there is less strain on muscles, joints, and soft tissues, allowing the body to function with greater comfort and efficiency. Instead of using force or manipulation, Spinal Touch works through precise, light contact to encourage the body to release tension, improve posture, and realign itself. By restoring this natural alignment, the technique supports and activates the body’s own innate healing processes.
What to expect during a Spinal Touch Session
Your session begins with a short consultation, where we go through your health form and discuss the pain or discomfort that has brought you in for treatment. This helps us understand your symptoms, your posture habits, and any relevant history that may be influencing your body’s alignment.
You’ll then be asked to change into a gown that opens at the back so your posture can be clearly assessed. Once ready, you’ll step onto a small board positioned in front of a plumb line. This allows us to observe how your body aligns against gravity. Gentle marks are made on the skin using an eye pencil to help identify any drift or tilt, for example, whether the spine sits to one side of the plumb line, if the pelvis appears twisted, whether the natural curve of the lower back has flattened, or if your posture leans forward or backward.
After this assessment, you’ll lie comfortably on the treatment couch. Using a series of gentle, precise touch points, similar to a very light massage, I work along specific areas of the back, neck, shoulders, and sacrum. These soft, targeted contacts help guide the body toward releasing tension and rebalancing itself.
Once the treatment is complete, you will return to the plumb line for a second posture check, allowing us to see how much your body has naturally corrected. Following this alignment check, gentle trigger point release may be offered where appropriate, focusing on areas that are still holding tension or guarding patterns. This is done using light, sensitive pressure and is always guided by your comfort, helping the body to further soften and settle into its new alignment. A full Spinal Touch session typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

Because posture and alignment patterns often develop gradually over months or years, it is common for Spinal Touch to be offered as a short series of treatments rather than a one-off session. The longer the body has been living with pain, imbalance, injury, or protective tension patterns, the more time it may need to feel safe enough to fully release and reorganise itself. Each session gently builds on the last, allowing the nervous system and soft tissues to adapt without force. Some people notice meaningful changes very quickly, while others benefit from a more gradual process of re-alignment and integration, particularly when pain or postural strain has been long-standing.

What can Spinal Touch help with?
Spinal Touch can be beneficial for a wide range of posture-related discomforts and general tension in the body. Because the technique focuses on restoring natural alignment and easing the strain caused by poor posture or imbalance, many people find it supportive for:
- Back pain or tension
- Shoulder and upper-back pain & tension
- Sciatica
- Fibromyalgia
- Neck pain
- Headaches & Migraines
- Frozen Shoulder
- Tennis Elbow
- Hip pain or pelvic imbalance (you might have been told you have one leg longer than the other)
- General recovery following surgical procedures (as a complementary support)
- Recovery following infections or periods of illness (to help restore strength and alignment)
- The after-effects of falls, accidents, injuries, or physical trauma
- Fatigue and exhaustion from overwork or demanding schedules
- The ongoing effects of gravity on posture, alignment, and the body’s overall ease
Spinal Touch is an exceptionally gentle method that uses only light contact, making it suitable for people of all ages and for those who may be sensitive to deeper or more forceful treatments. Because it places no strain on the body, many individuals who struggle with conventional bodywork find it a comfortable and deeply relaxing option.

When progress may be slower
Every body responds differently, and some people come to Spinal Touch with more complex histories. If you’ve experienced things like injury, surgery, or long-term pain, your body may have developed protective patterns over time. For example:
> long-standing or persistent pain
> a history of injury, such as a car accident or fall
> previous surgery (including joint or spinal procedures)
> areas of scar tissue or post-operative healing
> patterns of tension linked to stress or holding
> reduced movement or compensation patterns over time
In these situations, it’s important to allow the body time to respond. Rather than expecting everything to be resolved in a single session, we look for steady, meaningful change over a number of treatments.
Spinal Touch works in a gentle way, supporting the body to realign and encouraging the nervous system to settle out of a protective state into rest, repair and reorganisation. In some cases, this process can take a little longer. This doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Early changes are often more subtle, such as:
> feeling more relaxed
> improved ease of movement
> less tension or guarding
> better sleep
Pain relief can follow as the body begins to adjust. I will always work with you at a pace that feels right for your body, and we can adapt your sessions where needed to support the best possible outcome.
A Brief History
Spinal Touch was originally known as Aquarian Age Healing and was developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Randolph Stone, a chiropractor and osteopath who also founded Polarity Therapy. His work blended insights from Western anatomy and physiology with Eastern understandings of energy and balance.
Over time, the method evolved and became known as Spinal Touch. It was refined and shared by practitioners who recognised its value as a subtle yet effective approach to supporting balance and ease in the body. Today, Spinal Touch continues to be practised as a complementary, holistic technique for restoring natural alignment and wellbeing.
