Bowen therapy

Bowen therapy is also known as Bowen Technique. It is a gentle, light touch treatment that works with your body rather than forcing it to change.
People often come for Bowen because they are experiencing back pain, sciatica, neck or shoulder pain, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, or persistent aches and stiffness that are limiting their movement or everyday activities.
Because Bowen does not rely on strong pressure or forceful manipulation, treatment can remain comfortable when an area is painful or sensitive. It is suitable for people of different ages and levels of mobility, including those who find stronger treatments difficult to tolerate.

What is Bowen?

Bowen Therapy uses a series of precise rolling movements over muscles, tendons and connective tissue. These moves provide the brain and nervous system with subtle sensory information, encouraging the body to respond and make adjustments.
Rather than working only where you feel the pain, Bowen considers patterns of tension and restriction throughout the body. For example, back pain may be influenced by tension around the pelvis, hips, legs or diaphragm, while neck and shoulder pain may be connected with the upper back, jaw or posture.

How does Bowen work?

During a Bowen treatment, gentle rolling moves are made at specific points on the body. Short pauses are left between groups of moves, giving your brain and nervous system time to process the information being provided.
The combination of precise movements and carefully timed pauses gives your body an opportunity to respond. Clients commonly report reduced muscular tension, greater freedom of movement and improved comfort following treatment.

Bowen for back pain

Back pain can make sitting, standing, sleeping, walking and everyday movement uncomfortable. It may feel like a persistent ache, stiffness across the lower back, muscular tightness, sharp or shooting pain, or discomfort that becomes worse during particular activities.
Bowen therapy for back pain may include work around the lower back, pelvis, sacrum, hips, legs and diaphragm, depending on how your discomfort presents.
Treatment aims to reduce tension, improve ease of movement and help everyday activities feel more comfortable.

Bowen for sciatica

Sciatica commonly describes pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg. It may be accompanied by tingling, numbness or a burning or shooting sensation.
Bowen for sciatica may involve gentle work around the back, pelvis, hips and legs. Treatment considers muscular tension and movement patterns surrounding the painful area rather than applying heavy pressure directly to an already sensitive spot.

Bowen for neck pain

Neck pain may be accompanied by stiffness, restricted movement, upper-back tension or difficulty turning your head comfortably. It can also be associated with headaches, jaw tension or discomfort extending into the shoulders.
Bowen therapy for neck pain uses gentle moves around the upper back, shoulders and neck. Treatment may also include the jaw or other areas when they appear to be contributing to the overall pattern of tension.
Because the pressure and positioning can be adapted to each individual, Bowen is suitable for people of different ages and levels of mobility. It can be particularly welcome for older or frailer clients, people whose bodies are sensitive to pressure, and anyone who finds strong or painful treatments difficult to tolerate.

Bowen for shoulder pain and frozen shoulder

Shoulder pain can affect dressing, sleeping, reaching overhead or moving your arm behind your back. It may involve muscular tension, restricted movement, a previous injury or conditions such as frozen shoulder.
Bowen therapy for shoulder pain may include gentle work around the shoulder, upper back, neck and arm. Treatment aims to support greater comfort and easier movement without forcing the shoulder through a painful range.
Frozen shoulder and longstanding shoulder problems can take time to change. The number of Bowen treatments required will depend on the nature, severity and duration of your symptoms.

Bowen for knee pain

Knee pain can interfere with walking, climbing stairs, gardening, exercise and other everyday activities. Although pain is felt at the knee, tension or movement patterns involving the feet, ankles, hips, pelvis or thighs may also be relevant.
Bowen therapy for knee pain considers these wider relationships. Gentle moves can be used around the legs and supporting areas without forcefully manipulating the knee.

Bowen for plantar fasciitis and foot pain

Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain under the heel or along the sole of the foot, particularly when taking the first steps after resting.
Bowen for plantar fasciitis can include gentle treatment around the feet, ankles and lower legs. Because the way you stand and walk can influence other areas, the knees, hips, pelvis and lower back may also be considered.
Bowen offers a gentle approach for people seeking help with plantar fasciitis or persistent foot discomfort without applying heavy pressure to an already painful area.
