Counselling for loneliness provides a safe, supportive space to help you explore the causes of your loneliness and negative thought patterns and situations associated with it.
Loneliness can feel very isolating, you can feel stuck and not know how to start initiating friendships and relationships. You may wonder why you ended up feeling lonely and unhappy.
Counselling can help you uncover the negative thoughts and self talk that contribute to your loneliness, keeping you locked in a sense of isolation. These thoughts might be along the lines of:
- I can’t do it, I don’t know where to start or how to make friends and get a social life
- I find socialising difficult and I feel really anxious about it
- I feel really awkward talking to people for the first time
- School was difficult, college was difficult how is it ever going to be any different.
- I feel people just don’t like me
There might be many reasons you find yourself in this space of loneliness, it could be that you have suffered the breakup of relationships, friendships and family. You might of been on the receiving end of mental or emotional abuse from those you were close to and believe that all relationships will be like this.
Counselling can help you to understand how you arrive in this place, reframe negative and unhelpful thoughts. Put boundaries in place. Build better communication skills and confidence and explore healthy relationships. Enabling you to move forward out of loneliness and develop happier, healthier connections with people.
