Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) sometimes known as Tapping, Psychological Acupressure or Meridian Tapping. Is a technique that involves tapping on acupressure points on the head, face and upper body whilst repeating phrases that connect in with the experiences, feelings and situations associated with the things we want to work on including physical pain. It can be used as a stand alone technique or as part of a counselling session.

Emotional Freedom Technique can be used for:

  • Physical pain, back pain, shoulder pain, stiff neck etc. The stress of life and the pain associated with these conditions keeps it locked in place. EFT can release the associated stress and muscular tension, freeing the body from the pain
  • Fears & Phobias
  • Stopping smoking
  • Reducing food cravings
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • As part of a counselling session
  • And many more areas

Studies have shown that tapping on the acupressure points helps to calm the stress response (fight or flight) in our systems. When our fight or flight reaction gets switched on, our frontal cortex: that part of our brain responsible for being able to think and analyse gets switched off. No-one has the time to stop think and work things out when they are in danger, we only have instinctual ways to survive at that point, run or stay and fight (OR freeze).

When we run or we stay and fight both of these actions we will used the cortisol that is pumping through our bodies. Today we often find ourselves in situations that our systems perceive as threatening: divorce, bereavement, overwhelming responsibilities, ongoing money worries, pandemic, difficult and demanding jobs and relationships. In these situations it’s not appropriate to run or fight. So unable to make use of cortisol in our systems we stay in that stressed state. EFT helps us to clam the system and Amygdala (the part of our brain responsible for the fight or flight response). Enabling the prefrontal cortex to come back online so that we can reflect on the issue in a more resourced state. Along with reducing the muscular tension (in preparation to run or flight) and freeing us from pain. During the process the Amygdala learns that it doesn’t need to react like a fire alarm every time we encounter the same situation.

There is a fabulous documentary on You tube about EFT it’s an hour long but well worth the watch: https://youtu.be/9UypGSQtzFw?si=48J68wzA2aIp5iiA
