What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis Elbow is pain in the outer elbow.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

Despite its name Tennis Elbow is often caused by:

  • Over exertion in racket sports, squash, badminton, table tennis
  • Pain caused by repetitive pushing action
  • Holding something down for long periods of time 
  • Typing
  • Playing a musical instrument (playing the violin)
  • Extreme Frisbee players (or playing rather energetically)
  • Long hours at the computer keyboard
  • Gardening

The muscles involved in Tennis Elbow

When muscles knot up, (have trigger points) they can send pain to the outer elbow.

Muscles that often refer pain to the outer elbow are:

  • Extensors (forearm)
  • Triceps (back of the arm)
  • Brachioradialis (lower arm)
  • Supinator (lower arm)
  • Supraspinatus (top of shoulder blade )
  • Anconeus (outer elbow around the funny bone area) 

Massage works by gradually softening these trigger points and allowing the muscle to regain its flexibility  and there by dissolving the pain,

How many massages will I need?

It depends on:

  • How long you have had Tennis Elbow – the more recent injuries often soften out quicker.
  • How painful the injury  is- the more painful it is, the more gradual the massage – the massage needs to be as comfortable as possible so each case of Tennis Elbow is individual and will be treated accordingly.
